Poonam Somai, M.D.

Dr. Poonam Somai has been a valued member of St. Thomas West Medical community since 2009. She earned her medical degree from the University of Bombay in India in 2001 and completed her Internal Medicine residency at Michigan State University in 2005, where she served as Chief Resident. She went on to complete her fellowship training in Rheumatology at the University of Iowa in 2007.

Dr. Somai is board certified in Rheumatology and provides comprehensive care for patients with autoimmune and musculoskeletal conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, scleroderma, and polymyositis. She has a special interest and expertise in ultrasound-guided injections of the joints, tendons, and bursae.

She is deeply passionate about patient care and is known for her compassionate, attentive approach, taking the time to understand each patient’s individual needs.

Outside of clinical practice, Dr. Somai enjoys traveling, exploring diverse cultures and cuisines, reading. She likes spending time with her husband, and 3 kids and loves cuddling with their Cavapoo puppy, Theo.

She is also dedicated to serving the Gallatin community, providing specialized rheumatologic care through a satellite clinic once a week in that area.
